d3. Compare the reaction to foreign domination in: the Ottoman Empire & China

Thesis: In the beginning both the Ottoman Empire and China succumbed to foreign domination, but eventually China made reforms while the Ottoman Empire continued to decline.(good job dani, nice work overall - megan)

Thesis- good, but maybe add examples (how did China reform? how did the Ottoman decline?)

China:

A. China cant resist foreign control
1. Mongols rule (Yuan Dynasty) -mongols reconstruct every part of Chinese culture and politics, Chinese just go along with it.
  • Mongol army began raids of northern China in 1211 (increasing in frequncy as time went on), successfully captured the capitol in 1215, and had established full control of northern China by 1220
  • Khubilai Khan extended Mongol rule to all of China
2. Mongols rule declines- they didn't have a sufficient source on money-->general population loses confidence --> power struggles & imperial assassinations & civil war
  • After the end of Mongol rule China threw out, burned, and got rid of anything that had to do with Mongol rule, Khubilai Khan, or the Mongols in general
B. China's revoultion & reforms
1. conflicts & reforms
  • China had little demand for European market --> Opium War
  • Unequal Treaties: Treaty of Nanjing: British right to opium trade\
  • Taiping Rebellion & Boxer Rebellion
  • foreigh nations seize Chinese tribute states: Vietnam, Burma, Taiwan, Korea

2.1911 revolution didnt establish a state
  • foreign nations control China's economy: unequal treaties
  • Paris Peace conference aprrove Japanese exspansion in China
  • movement opposed imperialism--> communist & nationalist paries rise

Ottoman: decline

A. Austrian and Russian Empires are responsible for the intial shaving of Ottoman land
1. Already weak Ottoman Empire succumb to the forces of nationalism: Poles, Czechz, Slovaks, Serbs, Croats, Slovenes
  • Because the Ottomans could not ward off Euro. penetration or territorial dismemberment, Ottoman officials launched reforms (Tanzimat ) that didn't work--> sending the once powerful empire into a period of serious decline
2. trade declined due to circumvention (Ottoman usually act as middlemen in trade) --> economy declined
